Walking Trail

In 2012, the Town of Highland Lake started a walking trail in the lower half of the Pat Bellew Park.  In September 2013, the Town completed the second phase that consisted of the boardwalk that connects the walking trail and the wetlands area.  This walking trail was built to provide citizens with a place on which to safely walk on a flat surface, away from the traffic.

The final plan includes another half-mile in the upper section of the park.  The boardwalk will allow everyone, including students from local schools, to view the marine life that grows in wetlands.  This area also includes a beautiful "Pitcher Plant" bog that was donated by resident, the late Jane Lamb.

The walking trail, including the boardwalk and the bridge, were constructed without any type of grant funding.  The Town of Highland Lake supported this project in full!  This is quite an accomplishment for a Town this size.

How long is the walking trail?  If you begin on the concrete portion and circle back to your beginning, the trail is 1/8 mile.  If you start at one of the entrances and complete the trail, including the boardwalk and back, you have walked 1/2 mile.

Park Rules

  • The park is open from sunrise until sunset (8:00 p.m. in the summer months).
  • Except for wheelchairs, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the concrete.
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash while in the park and be accompanied by their owners (Ordinance HL-11-02).
  • Owners must pick up after their dogs.  Bags and disposal cans are provided at park entrances.
